Newport MeFit Class Descriptions

Spin

Spin is a self-paced group cycling class.  The instructor sets the cadence, but your heart rate determines the level of intensity.  No complicated moves to learn, just a motivating group environment and top-notch instruction.  This low impact, high intensity cardiovascular workout focuses on the quads, glutes, and hamstrings without pounding or straining the joints or connective tissues.  If you’re an experienced cyclist, spin classes can help improve your pedal stroke, boost your cardio endurance and increase your strength for those long weekend adventures.  Plus, you’ll continue to burn fat even after you get off the bike. Where else can you charge up a hill while keeping your eyes closed

Ball Class

Newport, OR  A lengthening and stabilizing class designed for people of all ages, particularly beneficial to those with structural challenges.  Alignment and body awareness is emphasized with a touch of yoga.  Feel the stretch in your muscles, the openness in your joints.

Cardio Pump

Newport, OR  Alternating between cardio exercises and selectorized weight machines you work your heart and your muscles in this energetic class. Morning or evening...you choose.

Restorative Yoga

Relax and renew your body with these well-supported, accessible stretches. In this class, we move slowly, but more deeply into the body, releasing tight muscles, tension and anxiety. Balance your intense workouts with mindful stretching, an opportunity to release and restore body and mind. Focus is placed on bringing ease into the mind.

Yoga Fundamentals: replaces “Hatha Yoga”

Whether you're new to yoga or you're an experienced practitioner, this class is an opportunity to revisit familiar poses and practice new ones. Explore the fundamental principles that will help you stay safe and enjoy the benefits of yoga for a lifetime. Questions and inquiries are greatly welcome. Postures are explored in detail and movements are slowed down giving space for the body to open.  Flexibility is not a prerequisite!

Vinyasa Flow

An active, empowering and physically challenging practice which conditions the whole body, increasing strength and flexibility.  Rhythmic breathing is synchronized with conscious movement, such that poses smoothly flow one into another, in near-continuous motion.  By integrating breath with motion energy blockages are released and the healthy flow of prana (energy or life-force) throughout the body is optimized.

Power Vinyasa

For those who seek to embody “going with the flow”, this challenging flowing practice synchronizes movement and breath in a room heated to about 80 degrees.
Bring a willing attitude to play, a towel and water and prepare to sculpt, sweat and release toxins.  An intermediate practice but variations are offered for all levels.

Power Yoga

Designed for the athletic individual who is seeking to move with purpose through a dynamic flowing sequence.  This challenging class is ideal for those with some experience who want to take their practice to the next level.  This class is faster-paced with emphasis on strength, core work, and stability.  Modifications are offered so all levels can participate with success. Alignment is explored while laughter is encouraged!

Anusara-Inspired Yoga:

Most of our instructor’s styles are inspired by the teachings of John Friend and the playful, yet alignment-oriented style that Anusara offers to the student. Principles of alignment have been dissected and adapted to communicate “real language” to real people.  Our instructors take pride in teaching outside the box, using principles of alignment that translate into functional movements.

Reformer Pilates

An exercise in balance incorporating core stability and peripheral mobility through modern exercises and rehabilitation principles. Our method emphasizes “functional” movements that will help the student move more freely in real life.  Ideal for the student with muscular and skeletal imbalances or for those who suffer from injuries. For the advanced-level, fit student exercises may be modified to make this an incredible workout!

Mat Pilates

Well-known for its wonderful ability to restore the spine to its natural curve, pilates
is great for anyone.  Focus will be placed on finding the neutral spine, maintaining it, then moving through various planes of the body.  Our pilates method is more functional for everyday life, not necessarily adhering to “classical” methods. Improves posture, balance and flexibility.

Note:  It is recommended that all student seek private instruction prior to entering this class!  See a qualified personal trainer for a postural assessment to get the most out of your practice. If you are dealing with back or spinal injuries, we ask that you take a couple of private pilates sessions prior to attending mat pilates classes. See a qualified trainer for a postural assessment.

Gentle Yoga

Appropriate for all levels, this class combines safe and gentle movements with proper breathing techniques. You will learn how to find a balance between softness and active engagement in your poses. Students should expect a slower-paced class that emphasizes gently stretching connective tissues and gentle hip openers This class is perfect for beginners as well as people with specific limitations and those recovering from injury.

Beginning Ashtanga

Learn to move gradually through a series of postures systematically designed to purify the body through sweating while linking each single breath to each single movement.  This class is great for the student new to Ashtanga who desires to focus on the fundamentals of alignment.
